This time of year is a time to reflect on the things we are thankful for; here at Next Century Publishing, one of things we are thankful for is books!
Vera Nazarian said, “Whenever you read a good book, somewhere in the world a door opens to allow in more light.” Here are the top five reasons to be thankful for books:
- Books Change Everything Just take a look at this list of 50 books that changed the world. Remember how Uncle Tom’s Cabin changed the heart of a nation, or how Samuel Johnson’s Dictionary ensured that English speakers would have a common way of communicating? Some books are so powerful that they have even been banned or burned.
- Books Teach You Something New A wealth of knowledge can be obtained from both fiction and non-fiction books. Each book we finish reading leaves us with something new we can use in our everyday lives, be it a new sense of adventure or a practical skill. The more you read the more you know!
- Books Help You Empathize Probably the most important thing books can teach is empathy. When you read a book, you choose to see the world through someone else’s eyes for a while, and that’s a powerful experience. Sometimes, looking at someone else’s situation – even if that someone is a fictional character – can change your perspective of your own.
- Books Are Friends
Like a friend, a book can be there to help you through the toughest of times. If it doesn’t provide you with a solution, then perhaps just the temporary escape from reality can be helpful. Regardless of your circumstance, books make great companions and are always there when you need them.
- Books Bring People Together Some of the best conversations you will ever have will revolve around books. Book clubs are great for meeting new friends, and making new connections. People who read are among the smartest people in the world, and what a better place to meet fellow readers than in a book club?!
